An examination of the problems caused by Communist Chinese policies, this film depicts the family strife it caused in the rural areas of modern China. Xu Mao is an aging farmer and widower who is losing touch with his nine growing daughters. However, with the help of a traveling government worker, he finds a way to understand his daughters and regain his role as supportive father.
