Rafting down the Xiao River in Hunan, three loggers tell of their harsh experiences of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Painfully humiliated early on during the political changes, Pan Laowu is still single after having suffered through a distressing love affair thirty years prior. Zhao Liang is working hard to provide for his family, and Shi Gu is mourning the prescribed marriage of his sweetheart to someone else. Later, she escapes and joins the men on the raft, with Pan Laowu risking his life to protect the lovers. The three men decide to rescue a former District Director who is nearing death in a reeducation labor camp, and Laowu sacrifices himself to safe the others.
