In the political turmoil of China, the poet Qiu Shi has been taken prisoner for protesting against the "Gang of Four." He is to be transported to prison at Wuhan by ship. During the voyage, however, his gentle ways and kind demeanor win the sympathies of the passengers and crew. With their help, he miraculously escapes.
