The film opens with the delay of the marriage of Tietou's parents due to the announced death of Stalin. As the film progresses, their peaceful existence is shattered by the Anti-Rightist Campaign, and Tietou's father dies as a result of relocation. During the subsequent enactments of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution, Chen loses two more husbands and friends' and family's lives are torn apart. Based on true memories of the director Tian Zhuanzhuang and his friends, "The Blue Kite" won the Grand Prix at the 1993 Tokyo Film Festival despite having been banned in China.
