To command...
Artist: Rogelio López Cuenca
Date:
1995
Medium: Oil on linen
Dimensions: 162 x 130 cm
Event: Chinese History
Motif:
Remembrance
In this work, the artist uses the colors and stars from the flag of the People's Republic of China, but rearranges the stars in the shape of two constellations, Ursa Minor and Major (The Lesser Bear and The Great Bear). Around each star are bits of text that make up a line from a poem by Mao Zedong, "To command that the sun and the moon redraw the sky for us." The work is an ironic statement regarding the excessive nature of totalitarian thoughts like those of the Cultural Revolution in China. --Victoria Combalia
