Wong Chuan first became known in the late 1970s (that is, after the Cultural Revolution) during what is known as the Wounded Art Movement. This movement was a reaction against the impersonal ideological art of Mao's era. It celebrated personal sentiments, particularly that of loss, and aimed to recover a human dimension in art. Of the many artists active in this movement, Wong Chuan is among the few who has embarked on a life-long search for the spiritual in art. --Johnson Chang
